Description of Ama Guides 6th Edition Free Download

In 1958, the American Medical Association (AMA) published “A Guide to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment of the Extremities and Back”3 in the Journal of the American Medical Association; this was followed by additional guides published in that journal. The First Edition was published in 1971 as a collection of 13 manuals.

The Second Edition5 was published in 1984, and the Third Edition6 was published in 1988. Third Edition was the first to use the Swanson methodology7, which assigned specific impairment ratings to upper-extremity range of motion (ROM) deficiencies. For workers compensation cases in Colorado, “pie charts” were still used to assess impairment from upper extremity ROM deficits, even though the Third Edition was replaced two years later by the Third Edition, Revised8.

There is a new standard for all other cases, which is the Sixth Edition. All federal employees (including postal workers) and residents of the District of Columbia are covered by federal workers’ compensation laws. Three major federal laws are the Federal Employees’ Compensation Act, Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act, and the Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act (HWCA) (LHWCA). Damage to specific body parts, such as loss of hearing, vision, or the loss of specific organs, is compensated under the Federal Employees Compensation Act (FECA 5 USC 8107). Ratings are done for “scheduled injuries” (e.g., a scheduled member of the body defined by section 8(c)(1)-(20) of the LHWCA) under the Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act. 12 Injuries to the upper and lower limbs, as well as hearing loss, are included in this category.

Guides are used in many cases where an automobile accident or personal injury has resulted in a significant amount of damage. Reserve or settlement value may be based on an insurance company’s use of an impairment rating. This may be taken into account by insurers and attorneys when determining the severity of an injury and the resulting case value. There are states where no-fault auto insurance lawsuits can only be filed if a specific impairment threshold is reached, and the Guides play an important role in providing numerical data to indicate that the threshold has indeed been met. Outside of the automobile no-fault system in Florida, an insured’s claims for pain and suffering are subject to limits as a basis for recovery. Permanent loss is defined in terms of the Guides.

According to the type of case and the jurisdiction, the Guides impairment ratings can be used in a variety of different ways.
In some jurisdictions, the term “disability” is used interchangeably with “impairment,” but the impairment rating value is used as part of a formula that determines a person’s disability level. The impairment value is also used as a threshold indicator for more serious injuries or illnesses by other jurisdictions, much like auto insurance companies do.
